11.00pm – 12.00 pm: Marc Jackson Making Comics Workshop

“Join Marc Jackson (BEANO, THE PHOENIX, GOOF) for a comic art workshop like no other, as he brings THIS GUY, THAT GUY! to the festival. Learn how to draw two characters for comics at the exact same time, as Marc shows you how to embrace your inner craziness and defy logic as you draw! How is it possible? Let’s find out!!”

12.15pm – 1.15pm: Laura Howell Comic Book Workshop

“When you were a child, how cool would it have been if a grown-up had come to your school and ASKED you to draw silly cartoons for an hour, or even a whole day? That would have blown my tiny mind. Sadly it never happened to me, but now I regularly make it happen for kids today. Since 2006 I’ve led many cartooning workshops in schools and libraries, mostly (but by no means exclusively) within the West Midlands – in summer 2018 alone I did over 30 workshops in libraries around the country for the Beano-themed Summer Reading Challenge. I’ve also given talks on my career in schools and at Arts events.

My priority in a workshop is to get everyone drawing, especially the hesitant artists. I do this by alternating live drawing demonstrations with fun games and drawing exercises. By the end of an hour-long or 90 minute session, most kids – and grown-ups – have not only created their own characters, but have learned how to put together a basic story. Sessions lasting a whole day can cover a full range of cartooning skills, from character design through to writing a script and planning out a whole comic page. I specialise in funny comics, but most of the skills taught in my workshops are applicable to a range of genres.”

1.30pm – 2.30pm: JaKe Detonator Star Wars Workshop

“Not so long ago, in a galaxy not too far away, a little boy from Hull entered a felt-tip drawing of Darth Vader into a competition and won a king-size chocolate bar.

That boy grew up to be JAKe Detonator – an official illustrator for Lucasfilm and Doctor Who

In his very interactive and lively workshop, JAKe will show you how to draw your favourite characters from the Star Wars universe, including Droids, Wookies, Bounty Hunters and more, just like in his books How To Speak Wookiee, How To Speak Droid with R2-D2 and How To Speak Astromech with BB-8.”

3.00pm – 3.45pm: Kings Heath Comic Con Event Coordinator Olly MacNamee talks with Mark Millar

Join Kings Heath Comic Con Event Coordinator Olly MacNamee as he interveiws Mark Millar about his careerl; working for DC and Marvel and alos creating his highly successful Millarworld comic book universe that has launched several films inclusing two Kick-Ass films and three Kingsman films. And maybe even get him to talak about his future plans with comics, Netflix and … Superman?

4.00pm – 4.30pm: Live Art Auction in support of the Kings Heath Food Bank

All proceeds from this charity auction will go to our chosen charity, the Kings Heath Food Bank. An in-person-only auction you don’t want to miss. As well as signed books and prints from artists such as Christian Ward, Al Ewing and original art by Laura Howell, there’s the chance to bid on the main item, an original painting of Judge Dredd by Phil Winslade from Judge Dredd Megazine #345. Phil rarely sells his original paintings, so this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a piece of comic book history.
